About China Lions
China Lions is a joint venture between the Chinese Rugby Football Association and New Zealand’s domestic championship winning Bay of Plenty. The Lions are the sixth team to be announced as part of Global Rapid Rugby Season One in 2020, joining Australia’s Western Force, the Malaysia Valke representing both Malaysia and South Africa, Fijian Latui, Manuma Samoa and the Hong Kong based South China Tigers. The purpose of the joint venture is to help promote the expansion of rugby in China and to create more opportunities for New Zealand-based players to play outside the country. Based in Shanghai, the Lions’ initial home games have been switched to Taupo, Rotorua and Adelaide due to the Covid-19 issue.
